The W126 was the second generation of Mercedes’ large luxury saloon, the S-Class. Development started in 1973, just a year after the launch of the previous model. However, with the 1973 oil crisis hitting demand hard, particularly in the all-important US market, Mercedes realised that it was of paramount importance to develop a more efficient model. As a result, the W126 design team placed great emphasis on making the car more aerodynamic – for example, the wipers are concealed behind the rear edge of the bonnet. In addition, new materials were used to make the car lighter without sacrificing strength, and the resulting car, which went on sale in 1979, was around 10% more economical on fuel than its predecessor. Representing the highest standard in luxury cars of the time, the W126 also comes from a time when Mercedes cars were over-engineered perhaps more than those of any other manufacturer; these cars are built to last. A wide variety of excellent six-and-eight-cylinder engines were offered, the 280SE being fitted with a 2.8-litre straight-six producing 180bhp. Although large cars, 280SEs so equipped offered decent performance, with 0-60 taking 10 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. Most W126s, including this one, were fitted with a four-speed automatic gearbox, the smooth nature of which perfectly complements the character of the car.
This example finished in white, presents well and the engine runs well, following a rebuild approximately three years ago. In the file is a V5C and an owner’s manual. The current MOT expires in February 2022.
