The R129 SL was Mercedes’ flagship luxury roadster from 1989 to 2001. Designed in 1984, it made use of a shortened version of the W124 saloon floorplan. It featured many innovative features for the time, such as an automatic rollover bar that would extend in the event of an accident. The level of standard equipment was high, with electric operation for the seats, windows and mirrors. The all-important convertible roof was electro-hydraulically operated. A particularly welcome feature for winter driving was the availability of a fixed hard top that could be installed with the convertible roof stowed away. As with all Mercedes of this period, build quality was exemplary, with these cars exuding a wonderful solid air that only high-quality design and engineering can provide.
This 1996 SL 320 is powered by the 3.2-litre twin-overhead-cam straight-six engine, producing 228bhp. Driving through an automatic gearbox, these engines are smooth and powerful, and sound lovely when driven enthusiastically. This car is in good all-round condition and is said to drive beautifully. The fabric roof is in good condition, while the hard top is present and said to be very useful in the winter cold. There are some scratches on the lower areas of the paintwork and the wheels could do with re-varnishing before too long, but otherwise the car is in good cosmetic condition as well. The original alarm has been disconnected, as it is a known source of trouble on these cars. The vendor has owned and enjoyed the car since 2013 and is only selling it as he lives in London and the implementation of the ULEZ charges is forcing him to get a more modern vehicle. Recently serviced by his local garage, it also comes with an MOT until September and a V5C.
