The Morris Minor was launched to much critical acclaim at the London Motor Show, Olympia in October 1928. It was advertised as a proper scaled-down large car, a side swipe at the Austin Seven, which was constructed on a dainty triangular chassis and was unconventionally sprung. Much was also made of the Minor’s technically advanced engine, sporting an overhead camshaft and a full 100cc larger than the Seven’s engine. By 1932, the complex and potentially costly overhead cam engine had been replaced by a side-valve unit; this actually offered similar performance, while being cheaper to produce and easier to maintain. Production ended in 1934 after over 86,000 sales, making way for the similarly successful Morris Eight.
The vendor has owned this car since 2011; after driving it for three years, a ground-up restoration was started, which is very nearly complete – all that remains to do is paint the front wings and headlamp bowls, or the purchaser could decide to repaint the whole body. The dynamo also needs refurbishing. The list of work carried out is very extensive, backed up by comprehensive set of receipts. For example, the gearbox has been rebuilt, the clutch replaced, the chassis galvanised, new springs fitted, LED lights fitted, the interior reupholstered… there is far too much to list here. Only for sale due to a house move and consequent loss of a garage space, this car comes with the aforementioned bills plus a V5c.
