1968 MGC Roadster
Reg. no. WGU 497F
Chassis no. GCN1 1456-G
Engine no. 29G-U-H/905
Instantly distinguishable from the otherwise externally similar MG B to the trained eye, due to the distinctive bulge in the bonnet, the MG C owed this feature to its 3-litre BMC C-Series straight-six. Producing 145bhp, this offered a sizeable step up in performance over the 4-cylinder B. A 120mph car, it could reach 60 in just 10 seconds, impressive figures for the time. Originally intended to replace the Austin-Healey 3000 in the BMC range, in fact the two cars were sold alongside each other. This, together with competition from the likes of Triumph, meant the C never quite found its niche and lasted just two years, from 1967 to 1969. Now, though, their resulting rarity makes them all the more appealing.
This car underwent a full restoration, both cosmetically and mechanically, over the course of nine months in 2016. Said by the vendor to be in immaculate, concours condition, it also features the desirable 4-speed manual with overdrive gearbox. A finalist in the concours competition at the MG event at Silverstone in 2016, it has also been featured on the BBC’s Top Gear – Extra Gear with Rory Reid. It comes with a USB stick with photographs documenting the restoration, plus bills, an MOT until September, and a V5c.
