Front-engined and water-cooled may not be the terms one most associates with Porsches of the 70s and 80s, but while the evergreen 911 used an air-cooled, rear-engined format, there was in fact an unbroken line of more ‘conventional’ cars for a period of nearly 20 years, from 1976 until 1995. 1982 saw the introduction of the 944, destined to become one of the most successful single models in the company’s history, with over 160,000 sold in its 9-year production run. Like its predecessor the 924, it was fitted with a 4-cylinder engine – a choice some enthusiasts thought was strange, but in fact Porsche had developed it in such a way that is was as smooth as a six-cylinder, while also producing an impressive power output. Of 2.5 litre capacity initially, by 1989 a 3-litre version was available for the S2, producing 208bhp.
This 1989 S2 – the final iteration of the 944 – has been in the current ownership for 5 years. In that time it has had various work done, including a lower body refurbishment, new sills and respray, and a new cambelt, water pump and steering rack. Fitted with electric seats, windows, mirrors and sunroof, all of these items work as they should and the car is said to be in good all-round condition. In the file are some old MOTs, bills, and photographs of the refurbishment, plus a V5c and and a current MOT that expires in June 2019.
