Lot 2011

Description:

1949 AJS Model 18 (logbook declares manufacture as 1958)
Reg. no. SVS 283
Frame no. A64712
Engine no. 49/18 12121
Both the 350cc and 500cc singles of AJS and Matchless were very popular as everyday transport in the 1950s and early 1960s having been developed from the WWII singles; they stayed in production until 1966. At this time AMC joined forces with Norton and production concentrated on parallel twins. The bike in the auction was exported to South Africa, so although manufactured in 1949 it was not registered in the UK until 1958. Our vendor states that this is an unrestored machine but that it appears complete and sound. The engine has good compression and runs; the bike is sold with a V5c.
