The second generation of the Mercedes CL – given the factory code C215 – was introduced in 1999, using the contemporary S-Class as its basis. Like its saloon sibling, it came equipped with the very latest technology Mercedes had to offer – for example, it was the first car in the world with xenon headlights on both low and high beam. Also a first was the radar-guided cruise control system, which maintained a consistent gap to the car in front. An advanced self-levelling hydraulic suspension system was fitted, which could be raised, lowered or stiffened by the touch of a button on the dash. Soon, of course, the car was given to in-house tuners AMG. In addition to subtle cosmetic changes for a sportier look, AMG inserted one of their hand-built 5.4 litre V8s, producing 355bhp. Inside, the cars had various extras – for example, seats which are both heated and air-conditioned, and double glazing.
This 2002 AMG model is in good condition, and is said by our vendor to drive effortlessly. It comes with an MOT to November, as well as service history and a V5c. These CLs offer extremely rapid luxury motoring at less than the price of a modern base-spec small hatchback; why haven’t we all got one?
