After the demise of the Majestic Major in 1968, all subsequent Daimler cars were even more upmarket versions of Jaguar’s contemporary offerings. That was no bad thing, for Jaguars of this era were excellent, particularly the XJ6, which had taken over the mantle from the MKII, the S-Type and the 420 and proved to be a strong seller. The Daimler version of this car was called the Sovereign, with the Sovereign Vanden Plas being the model at the very top of the range. The Sovereign came with two engine options, the 4.2 litre straight six or a 5.3 litre V12. Most Sovereigns were produced in long wheelbase form; the extra space suiting the luxurious feel of the car.
This 4.2 litre long wheelbase Sovereign Vanden Plas has been ‘rejuvenated’ over the last 3 years by the vendor; as a result it is now in very good condition. Work carried out includes an engine overhaul and an automatic gearbox service, new carpets and upgrades to the speakers, stereo and air conditioning, to bring them all up to modern specification. Additional upgrades include electronic ignition and an oil cooler. With an MOT valid until May next year, it also comes with MOTs dating back to 1986, some bills and a V5c.
