The DKW W2000 was sold in its home market of Germany under the Hercules brand. No ordinary motorcycle, it was the first production bike with a Wankel rotary engine. Hercules’ parent company, Fichtel und Sachs, had been the second licensee of this design in 1960, and in 1974 the W2000 was launched after a lengthy period of development. Displacing just 294cc, it nevertheless produced good power. The frame that bore the new engine however was conventional in design, possessing a clean, pure appearance that was lacking from many of its competitors of the time. Perhaps a victim of its own novelty, only 1800 examples were built up to 1977, when the tooling was sold to Norton.
This W2000 comes with a Wessex side car, which suits the bike perfectly and the combination looks superb in its very striking colour scheme. Bought by the vendor from a deceased estate two or three years ago, the bike unfortunately is sold without any documentation but is said to be mechanically perfect, if in need of recommissioning before road use.
